Removing Dog Urine

How Difficult is Removing Dog Urine Out of Carpet?

CritterZone Units Will Help Get the Dog Urine Out of Carpet.

STEP 1:  Try to identify the age and severity of the accident.  Has it soaked into the carpet padding or even the sub-flooring?  Is this an old or new stain?  Clean the area as best you can by thoroughly soaking up the accident with an old towel or rag until you aren’t able to absorb any more. Also, the Dog Chat has a great remove dog urinestart to getting the physical particles from the fibers of the material.

Dog Chat Recipe

  1. Get some white vinegar, 3% hydrogen peroxide, liquid hand soap, and baking soda.
  2. If the area is still wet you should first attempt to absorb the dog urine. Leaving it there to dry out will only encourage bacterial growth which causes the smell.
  3. Mix a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar solution to the carpet. Work the solution into the carpet with a soft brush (or your fingers) to ensure it penetrates the carpet fibers below. Then blot the area using the paper towel method above to absorb the vinegar mixture. The vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the dog urine. If you own a wet/dry vacuum extractor use it to remove excess moisture.Air Purifier for Pets - Pet Odor Eliminator - baking soda
  4. When the area has dried or almost dried sprinkle a good handful of baking soda over the soiled area. Mix half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent.
  5. Pour the 3% hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing detergent mixture over the baking soda. Alternatively, you can use a spray bottle for the hydrogen peroxide/dishwashing detergent solution. Then, work the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide/detergent mixture well into the carpet with your fingers (put on some rubber gloves) or use a brush. Allow the area to dry completely. Once the area is thoroughly dry, vacuum up the baking soda. A fan or heater can assist drying. The baking soda absorbs the odor and urine. (Use a hard bristled brush to loosen up the baking soda if necessary.)

Will this work on dog urination stains that are old? Just found pee stains on the carpet that could have happened a month ago! Will this also prevent my dog from wanting to pee in the same area?

      Hi Amy,
The recipe above should work for old stains, it might just take a little more effort. One product that works well and helps keep pets from peeing in the same area is Clorox® Urine Remover. It breaks down the enzymes in the stain, which is how pets identify their marked territory.

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda should not be used together as a cleaning agent. They neutralize each other, making the mixture as useful as water.

    1. Blot the area to remove most of the excess urine
    2. Spray (soak) the area with vinegar/water 50/50 solution
    3. Scrub gently (I use paper towels to do so)
    4. Pour baking soda onto the stain. I usually pour 1/8-1/4 of a cup. Let it sit for 24 hours. I usually block the area off or gently set a pee pad on top.
    5. If still wet: Gently pick up some of the wet excess, if not already dry. Return to step 4 again and spray with vinegar. Cover with baking soda (more than you used previously). Wait 12-24 hours and move to step 6
    6. If dry: vacuum excess baking soda. Be sure to vacuum over the area several times.

    7. Put a pee pad over the area and over the course of a 2 week period, slowly move it towards the door you want them to use

Sorry, but this is not correct. Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda/sodium bicarbonate, particularly in the presence of a sulfate (ie the dishwashing soap), is the exact same mechanism used by oxygen-bleach cleaning products such as oxyclean (well, they technically use sodium carbonate, but for our purposes, it’s the same). It’s a very powerful cleaning combination, much more so than nature’s original solvent, water.

This was a helpful article about removing dog urine. My dog went to the bathroom on my carpet a few hours ago. I’ll look for a professional who can clean my carpet as soon as possible.
